Virgin Mobile Profits

Wireless carrier Virgin Mobile USA Inc, which has agreed to be acquired by Sprint Nextel Corp, reported a higher quarterly profit that beat market estimates as it continued to benefit from the growth of its profitable hybrid customer base.

Hybrid gross additions grew to 63 percent of total gross additions in the second quarter, from 55 percent in the first quarter, resulting in a 20 percent year-over-year growth in total hybrid gross customer additions in the first half of 2009, the company said.

Walking While Texting

An Ohio State University analysis found that for the past few years, the number of emergency room visits resulting from pedestrian cell phone accidents has doubled year-over-year. The study showed that in 2008, more than 1,000 pedestrians visited emergency rooms for injuries like walking into a pole while texting or spraining an ankle after falling down while talking on a cell phone.

Motorola Posts Profit

Motorola, the largest US mobile phone maker, rebounded from three straight quarters of losses and posted a small quarterly net profit on Thursday.

The Schaumburg, Illinois-based company reported a net profit of 26 million dollars in the second quarter of the year compared with a net profit of four million dollars a year ago.
Motorola posted a net loss of 231 million dollars in the first quarter.

Earnings per share of one cent in the second quarter were better than expected by analysts who had forecast a loss of four cents per share.

Emergency SMS Messages

The UKs telecoms regulator Ofcom has proposed a voluntary trial, enabling people to send a text message to the UKs emergency services which should be made mandatory in the country.

The proposal forms a part of a wider consultation on changes to Ofcom?s regulations that need to reflect new European law that comes into effect on 25 May, 2011.

As per the new European regulations, access to the Emergency services for disabled people must be as close to that delivered to other consumers as the technology will allow. While the emergency text scheme does have limitations, such as taking longer to converse by text than by phone, it offers greater equivalence than current alternatives.

More Mobile Web Surfing in China

Mobile phones are an increasingly popular way to surf the Internet in rural China, but a digital divide is still growing between the countrys rural and urban areas, a survey found.

Rural China had over 100 million Internet users at the end of last year, accounting for just 15 percent of the rural population, according to a report put online Thursday by the China Internet Network Information Center , the government-controlled overseer of Internet domain names in the country. That compares to 45 percent of people online in bigger cities, a gap that has widened for the last two years, the report said.

Verizon Launching a Payment System

Verizon Wireless customers will soon be able to charge up to $25 a month in online purchases to their Verizon Wireless accounts.

The carrier today announced that the e-commerce payment service, based on services created by Danal Inc. will be launched later this spring.  

The service will require text messaging-enabled phones, and that purchases be made from Verizon-approved online stores, which include game sites and social networks.

The service requires that customers click a BilltoMobile button during checkout from a participating online Web site. Users will be asked to input their mobile numbers and mobile billing zip codes for authentication.

New SMS Fraud

A new fraud, targeting people selling second-hand goods in newspaper classifieds and online services such as Gumtree, is in operation. According to the Wireless Application Service Providers Association of South Africa (WASPA), the purported buyers use commercial SMS messaging services to send sellers fraudulent confirmations of bank deposits so that they can obtain the sellers goods.

On receipt of an apparently legitimate confirmation that they have deposited the money, they then insist on taking the goods from the seller, who soon discovers that no deposit has been made to his or her bank account. The fraudsters currently operate mostly on the weekends and in the evenings.

Adult Texting on the Rise

The number of Americans under the sway of the text message has increased again, says the latest Pew Resarch study called Cell phones and American Adults. Still, as you might expect, adults still trail teens by a the considerable number.

The rise, year-over-year, is quite interesting. About 72 percent of adult cell phone users send and receive text messages; last year at the same time the number was 65 percent. Meanwhile, 87 percent of teen cell phone users text, but the percentage hides a much higher number: teens send and receive about 50 SMS messages per day, while adults send and receive five times less, or about 10.

Book Review: Distrust That Particular Flavor By William Gibson

William Gibson is the defining author of our digital age. More than any social media pundit or Popcorn futurist, he has defined the dystopia we can expect once we escape the dystopia we're in now. His fiction - a trilogy of trilogies that works backwards from the distant future to a world that is ours - is constantly approaching the present while exploring what it means to exist in a culture mediated by electronics. Technology that lets plants send text alerts when they are running dry may someday reduce overwatering, says a Discovery Channel report. A chip about the size of a clip-on earring can be attached to a plant leaf and linked to regular cell-phone networks, sending a text message when it is time to irrigate. Watering only when necessary could save water and energy, especially in the arid West. Twitter to begin 'reactively' censoring tweets in specific countries, still no love for China

It's no secret that certain countries have different views over freedom of expression on the internet, but this hasn't stopped Twitter's attempt to keep its service running in as many places as possible. In its latest blog post, the microblogging service announced that it'll begin "to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country" when required, in order to keep said content available to all users elsewhere (as opposed to blocking it globally). The withheld tweets will be marked accordingly while their authors get notified with reasons where possible, and internet legal rights monitor Chilling Effects will also post the relevant take-down notices on a dedicated page.

This may seem like some form of censorship taking over Twitter, but the company only mentioned those of "historical or cultural reasons" like the ban of pro-Nazi content in France and Germany; so it's not clear whether Twitter will also handle similarly with tweets that potentially lead to events such as the UK riots last year. Even though Twitter didn't elaborate further for Reuters, there is one reassuring line in the post:

"Some [countries] differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there."

One such country is most likely China, and back at AsiaD in October, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told us that there's simply no way for his company to work with the Chinese government (you can watch him answering us at 38:17 in the video -- courtesy of All Things D -- after the break):

"The unfortunate fact is we're just not allowed to compete in this market, and that's not up to us to change. There are obviously many factors that add up to this sour relationship, but the contradiction between China's strict internet monitoring policy and Twitter's core values is most likely the biggest obstacle. And of course, the Chinese government would favor its home-grown tech properties, anyway. That said, several months ago, one of the country's largest microblogging services Sina Weibo was criticized by the authorities for not censoring fast enough, so it's obvious that it'd be even trickier to work with a foreign company that sees things differently. Things are unlikely to change any time soon, or ever, unless China relaxes its policy.

Smartphones Control Systems in the Cars of the Future

Carmakers are working on entirely new control systems for the cars of the future that will work like smartphones or tablet computers. Some of the designs were on show at the recent Detroit Motor Show and the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Conventional knobs, levers and switches might soon be a thing of the past and even the touch-sensitive screens found in the dashboards of many cars of today will be replaced as carmakers rapidly try to find clever solutions to the array of operating systems.

"With such a lot of data coming to the driver today and so many new possibilities, the conventional operating systems are not enough," says Mercedes researcher Bharat Balasubramanian.

Like a smartphone or tablet PC, the simple movement of a hand or finger would be enough to activate a function. "Cameras and infra-red sensors recognize the movement of the hand and measure the distance with the electronics, thus understanding every movement pattern and command," according to Audi developer Werner Hamberger.

Audi showcased at the Las Vegas event a cockpit fitted with three head-up displays that project important information onto the windscreen. The image to the left can only be seen by the driver while the image to the right can only be seen by the passenger. The central image can be seen by both.

It works something like this. The central image shows up several menus from which the driver and passenger can choose. The passenger can for instance choose a short film about a hotel or museum. Should the driver be convinced by the passenger that it is the right destination, a simple wink to the left can be chosen to enter the destination into the GPS system.

Similar steps are being taken by Mercedes with its Dice system. A white dice shows the vision of a car interior...

The service uses GPS to locate buyers and sellers, so nearby produce is highlighted. Google Sued For Group-Texting Service

Google and its recently acquired social apps company Slide have been hit with a potential class-action lawsuit for allegedly sending SMS messages without first obtaining recipients' consent.

In court papers filed late last week, Florida resident Bret Lusskin, Jr. alleges that he received more than 105 SMS messages on one day in April through Disco.com -- a group-texting platform developed by Slide that allows people to send texts to 99 group members at once. When one recipient replies, the response is sent to everyone in the group.

No Citations for Text Messaging

Teenagers and adults say they slip under the radar of law enforcement when they text on cellphones while driving their vehicles.

A state law which became effective Dec. 1, 2010, bans people from driving a motor vehicle while writing or sending an electronic text message.

Based on the amount of citations written for violating the law, many people continue to text and drive.

A survey of local law enforcement agencies shows few if any citations written since the law went into effect Dec. 1.

Citizens of Israel will receive a text message notifying them of an alarm in their area as part of a new Home Front Command drill to take place throughout the country in a number of weeks.

China Restores Texting Capabilities

China has restored mobile text message services in a Western province where they were suspended for months following unrest. Limited Internet access is also returning to the region.

Residents in the Xinjiang region, which is home to Chinas Uighur ethnic minority, can now send up to 20 text messages a day but are still barred from making international phone calls unless they register with authorities, the official China Daily newspaper said Monday. China cut off virtually all Internet, text message and international call services in the region after deadly ethnic riots there claimed nearly 200 lives last July.
