SmartPhones Impacting Vision

A new study has suggested that smart phone users reading text messages and internet pages hold their devices at a closer distance than they would for printed text?which may have important implications for prescribing vision correction.

According to the study by Mark Rosenfield and colleagues of SUNY State College of Optometry, New York, optometrists should pay attention to the working distance at which patients hold their smart phones and perform appropriate testing at those distances.

Crime Stoppers Using Text Tips

Officials involved with Winnebago CountyWide Crime Stoppers say it won't take long before texting tips surpass telephone tips to the anonymous crime reporting line that pays cash upon convictions.

The local Crime Stoppers, one of more than 600 crime tip lines nationwide, dropped its toll-free 800 line effective March 1 and implemented a new telephone number and software to accept text messages.

Tips can now be called in to (920) 231-TIPS or 8477, while texts should be sent to CRIMES or 274637 with IGOTYA and the tip entered into the message field.

The common fear about phone texting while driving is that you may not see a car coming and will get into an accident. This 21-year-old patient, however, was the passenger. So what's wrong with that? I asked. What' is wrong with texting if you are the passenger?

Well, my professor said, this young lady became another casualty of the texting epidemic because she didn't see the collision happening and couldn't brace herself. The angle of her head was such that the airbag hit her obliquely and blinded her to some extent in both eyes.

Texting in Class

College students say their professors would be shocked to know just how often they send text messages during lectures, and one researcher has offered a simple and stringent solution: Give failing grades to text-happy students.

Nine in 10 students said in a Wilkes University study released this month that they have sent and received texts during class, although a much smaller portion of students believe educators should allow unlimited texting in class as long as it does not disturb others.

Google acquires PittPatt, wants to know you on a face-to-face basis

Google's quietly pitter-pattering its acquisitive ways back into the controversial realm of facial recognition technology. To do that, the company busted out its oversized wallet to fold Pittsburgh-based PittPatt into the Mountain View borg. Founded by a trio of PhD's from Carnegie Mellon University, this three-man strong outfit specializes in the sort of object recognition software you've come to know as "tagging." Is this a reversal of the Do No Evil tech giant's prior waffling on the dubious visioning tech, or just another massive weapon in its social networking crusade against Facebook? We'd err on the side of both, although the company's new employees aren't exactly playing their cards for us to see. A brief statement on the triumvirate's site makes vague mention of "computer vision technology" being core to Google's products and points to the tech's planned integration in photo, video and mobile applications. So, basically, expect to see Picasa, Goggles, YouTube and Google+ watch you as you flaunt your internet celebrity ways to that front-facing camera.
