AT&T Class Action

AT&T Mobility notified its subscribers Thursday that they might be entitled to benefits from a proposed class-action settlement over alleged improper charging of Internet taxes.

Subscribers sued AT&T earlier this year, saying the carrier charged them Internet taxes on their mobile service bills in violation of the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act and other laws. Suits in various courts were transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, in Chicago. AT&T and the plaintiffs in the case, who represented a broad class of AT&T Mobility customers, reached a settlement agreement in July.

Israel to Use Text Alerts

Citizens of Israel will receive a text message notifying them of an alarm in their area as part of a new Home Front Command drill to take place throughout the country in a number of weeks.

In honor of the annual drill, Turning Point 5, the command will try out a new technology unlike that used to send a regular SMS. In order to send the text, the system overrides cellular networks and delivers a message with a different sound.

Google employees are testing a new mobile device that runs on the companys Android operating system, as the search giant continues its push into the wireless market and toward more direct competition with Apple Inc. iPhone.

In a blog post Saturday, Google said the new device combines hardware built by an unnamed partner with its Android software. The free software is crucial in Googles efforts to make its search engine and other services as accessible on cell phones as they already are on personal computers.

Crime Stoppers Using Text Tips

Officials involved with Winnebago CountyWide Crime Stoppers say it won't take long before texting tips surpass telephone tips to the anonymous crime reporting line that pays cash upon convictions.

The local Crime Stoppers, one of more than 600 crime tip lines nationwide, dropped its toll-free 800 line effective March 1 and implemented a new telephone number and software to accept text messages.

Tips can now be called in to (920) 231-TIPS or 8477, while texts should be sent to CRIMES or 274637 with IGOTYA and the tip entered into the message field.
