Amazon subsidiary A9.com has just launched a new augmented reality iPhone app?Flow Powered by Amazon. Flow uses augmented reality to help users explore and discover tens of millions of products in a real world setting, including books, DVDs, packaged electronics and toys, to give shoppers interactive product information about these items in the real world. Here's how it works. Once downloaded, you can point the app toward a book, video game, CD, DVD or other product with a UPC barcode. When the app recognized the product, it will display the Amazon.com product information, including the option to play multimedia content and read customer reviews.

Texting While Driving Now Against the Law

Thursday Governor Patrick signed a bill that bans texting while driving as well as requires vision tests every five years to older drivers. The new law also bans scanning the internet on a mobile device while driving.  The fine for texting while driving will be $100 for a first offense, and up to $500 for repeat offenses. The fine will not be considered a moving violation. Police will be able to pull over anyone they suspect of texting while driving.

Also included in the law is a ban for anyone under the age of 18 from talking on their cellphone and driving. Violators face suspension of their license or permit.

Ethics Code and Texting

Texas Education Agency staff requested the change to the ethics code because they said they are receiving disciplinary case referrals in which teachers were found to have sent students thousands of text messages.  Sometimes the content of the messages was not inappropriate on their face but the volume of messages and time of day the messages were sent indicated that the educator was grooming the student for a future sexual relationship.

Cell Phones and Cancer

The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.


The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that do not find a link between increased tumors and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Herberman is basing his alarm on early, unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science and he believes people should take action now ? especially when it comes to children.
