Girl, Apple's gonna make you sweat with a treadmill patent

Wednesday means we're about to delve into Cupertino's newest patents. Remember: just because there's a patent, doesn't mean it'll be in your next iPad. Got it? Good. This week's haul starts with a rather dry patent to correct bad motion sensing. Accelerometer-based devices are only as good as the data it collects, using a flat horizontal plane as a reference point -- any incline and the whole show is ruined. Apple's 3D patent can mathematically correct for gravitational movement along the "plane of motion." The second's about getting sweaty on sports equipment. Shove your iPod into a treadmill and it'll record your vital statistics for uploading to a third party website for "mutual encouragement." It wouldn't be hard to imagine this working its way into something similar to Nike+, but it would be hard to imagine Nike insisting that Apple just do it.

LomoKino Super 35 Movie Maker lets you channel your inner Charlie Chaplin for $80

Ever wish you could return to a simpler cinematic era -- one characterized not by 3D graphics and Spielberg, but by silent images and Eisenstein? Well, you can now spearhead the movement yourself, with Lomography's new LomoKino Super 35 Movie Maker. With this device (pictured above), amateur filmmakers can manually produce their own frill-free movies on any roll of 35mm film. All you have to do is load your film into the so-called "magic box," turn the crank and let the LomoKino work its magic. The camera, which boasts a 25mm lens and max aperture of f/5.6, will capture 144 shots on a single roll of film, good for about 50 to 60 seconds of footage. It also supports a wide array of effects, including slide film, color negative, redscale and black and white. Once that's developed, you can run it through Lomography's LomoKinoScope, direct it toward a light source, and watch your homemade Baby's Lunch or Nanook of the North unfold before your eyes. You won't find any sound, special effects, or fancy post-production tools here -- just moving images, plain and cinematically pure. Lumiere enthusiasts can grab one now for $80, or opt for both the LomoKino and the LomoKinoScope, bundled together for $100. For more details, roll past the break for a sample video and the full PR, or get a closer look at the LomoKino in the gallery, below.

A Fifth of US Homes Cellular with No Landlines

For the first time, the number of U.S. households opting for only cell phones outnumber those that just have traditional landlines in a high-tech shift accelerated by the recession.

In the freshest evidence of the growing appeal of cell phones, 20 percent of households had only cells during the last half of 2008, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey released Wednesday. That was an increase of nearly 3 percentage points over the first half of the year, the largest six-month increase since the government started gathering such data in 2003.

The 20 percent of homes with only cell phones compared to 17 percent with landlines but no cells.

Google Rolls Out Native iPhone Gmail App

At long last, Google has rolled out an official Gmail app for Apple's mobile operating system. Users of iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices can now get their Gmail with a tap.

"We've combined your favorite features from the Gmail mobile web app and iOS into one app so you can be more productive on the go," Google product manager Matthew Izatt wrote in a blog post. "It's designed to be fast, efficient and take full advantage of the touchscreen and notification capabilities of your device."

Gmail App Keywords

The keywords Google is using to describe its Gmail app are speed, efficiency and touch. On the speed front, Google aims to give iOS users the information they need more quickly, with minimal effort and distraction.

In practical terms, that means users get alerted to new messages with push notifications and sounds. Users can also find an e-mail by searching the entire inbox. The app will auto-complete e-mail addresses from a user's Gmail contacts, or the address can be selected from a device's address book. A user can even upload photos with a click using a new attachment button in compose view.

On the efficiency front, the Gmail app promises to help users organize their e-mail. A user can use Priority Inbox to focus on important messages first, quickly scan e-mails on the same subject with threaded conversations, and organize mail by archiving, labeling, starring, deleting and reporting spam.

Will Apple Users Adopt It?

Of course, the Gmail app is optimized for touch. A user can pull down the inbox to refresh for new mail, swipe right to view labels without ever leaving the inbox, or slide a finger to scroll through e-mails.

"Google has been ambivalent about putting out native apps for Apple devices. It had wanted to take an HTML5 approach to create consistency across platforms...
