OCZ Octane SSD benchmarked, new Indilinx controller holds its ground

In the case of OCZ's Octane drive, our good spirits derive from the sturdy performance of its freshly-conceived Indilinx Everest controller, which ought to keep big players like SandForce and Samsung on their toes. HotHardware just reviewed the $369 $879 512GB variant and found that it delivered fast boot-up times, strong read speeds and writes that were just shy of enthusiast-class drives. Ethics Code and Texting

Texas Education Agency staff requested the change to the ethics code because they said they are receiving disciplinary case referrals in which teachers were found to have sent students thousands of text messages.  Sometimes the content of the messages was not inappropriate on their face but the volume of messages and time of day the messages were sent indicated that the educator was grooming the student for a future sexual relationship.

A Fifth of US Homes Cellular with No Landlines

For the first time, the number of U.S. households opting for only cell phones outnumber those that just have traditional landlines in a high-tech shift accelerated by the recession.

In the freshest evidence of the growing appeal of cell phones, 20 percent of households had only cells during the last half of 2008, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey released Wednesday. That was an increase of nearly 3 percentage points over the first half of the year, the largest six-month increase since the government started gathering such data in 2003.

The 20 percent of homes with only cell phones compared to 17 percent with landlines but no cells.

AT&T Class Action

AT&T Mobility notified its subscribers Thursday that they might be entitled to benefits from a proposed class-action settlement over alleged improper charging of Internet taxes.

Subscribers sued AT&T earlier this year, saying the carrier charged them Internet taxes on their mobile service bills in violation of the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act and other laws. Suits in various courts were transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, in Chicago. AT&T and the plaintiffs in the case, who represented a broad class of AT&T Mobility customers, reached a settlement agreement in July.

A 17-year-old Columbia High School student is out on bond for allegedly threatening to blow up the school.

Investigators say Kelsey Davis sent a bomb threat to a teacher via text message using an app that disguised the message with a long distance number.

Cell Phones Used To Contact Pilots

Minneapolis airport police say controllers tried to contact the pilots of a wayward Northwest Airlines jetliner by radio, data message and cell phone after it failed to land as scheduled.

Federal officials are investigating how the San Diego-to-Minneapolis flight overshot the airport by 150 miles on Wednesday. The pilots have told authorities they were distracted by a heated conversation.
