Sexting Laws

Teenagers may think it is harmless, but sending sexually explicit pictures and messages over cell phones can lead to emotional problems and criminal charges that will affect them for the rest of their lives, criminal justice officials said.

Investigators and prosecutors on Thursday warned of the dangers of electronically transmitting racy images and words at a hearing organized by Rep. Anastasia Pittman, D-Oklahoma City, into the practice of sexting, distributing nude or seminude self-portraits over cell phones.

Two Part Cell Phone

Fujitsu is breaking new ground in the cell phone market with the imminent introduction of a cell phone that splits into two parts.

The F-04B was announced this week as part of NTT DoCoMos new line-up and is scheduled to hit Japanese shelves in March or April next year. At first glance it looks like a conventional slider cell phone: grab onto the bottom of the phone and a numeric keypad slides out. But decouple a catch and the entire back half of the phone can be pulled off.

Text Messaging Resumed

Text messaging services restarted with some restrictions Sunday for cell phone users in far western China, more than six months after deadly ethnic rioting prompted the government to shut them down.

Users are once again able to send text messages throughout China, but sending texts to overseas numbers remains prohibited, a staffer with the information office of the Xinjiang provincial government said. She declined to give her name as is customary.

Texting Helps Lose Weight

Teens love text messages--and those texts may help them lose weight, if they are done right. A study tested out various types of weight management-themed text messages on overweight teens to see what they liked, finding that they favored positive messages but disliked thoughtful questions.

Overweight and obese teens can be a tough crowd when it comes to weight-loss interventions--many have a tough time adopting more healthful diet and exercise routines. Researchers from the University of Michigan thought tailored text messages might be a good way to help teens adopt lifestyle changes, since texts have been successful in helping others drop bad habits.

Driving and Cell Phones Do Not Mix

Talking on a cell phone while driving increases the risk of a crash but not nearly as much as text messaging while behind the wheel, according to a report released on Tuesday.

The report by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that texting while driving increased the risk of a crash or a near crash by more than 23 times.

T-Mobile Sued

T-Mobile is being sued by EZ Texting  which claims the fourth-largest U.S. carrier was unfairly blocking its SMS delivery service due to connections with medical marijuana groups.

The company, which offers groups and organizations way to have mass SMS campaigns, said T-Mobile was concerned about its connections to a legal in the state it was located marijuana dispensary group. EZ Texting said it severed ties with this marijuana group but its short code capabilities were revoked anyways.
