Microsoft Dangles Carrot In Front Of Developers With Windows Store Economics, But Will It Be Enough?

Tonight Microsoft revealed that the public release of its Windows 8 Beta will be taking place sometime in late February of 2012. Along with Windows 8 Beta, Microsoft will also be launching its "Windows Store", which was announced back in September. (You can check out the details on the Window Store's new blog.) In previewing the new app store, Microsoft also revealed some details about what developers can expect in terms of both pricing and revenue share. For starters, as the company has previously said, users will be able to license, purchase, and download Metro-style apps from the Windows Store -- meaning that it will be the sole source of Metro apps. (Metro being the name Microsoft uses for the design language it developed for its new, touch friendly Windows Phone 7 interface.) While Microsoft is already operating app stores for Xbox and Windows Phones, this is their big push to create an in-Windows app store to take on iTunes.

Tracking Pets with a Mobile Signal

Qualcomm, which launches few consumer products, later this month will launch a pet-tracking service built using proprietary technology from its communications business.

Snaptracs, a subsidiary within Qualcomm, will launch Tagg, a pet-tracking system with GPS and wireless communication capabilities for owners to immediately track lost dogs or cats. The system includes a purpose-built tracking device that looks like a watch and clips on to existing pet collars.

Messaging still dominates non-voice mobile revenues worldwide, with the global messaging market worth $179.2bn in 2010, according to a report by Portio Research.

The fifth edition of the Mobile Messaging Futures 2011-2015 report predicts that the market will pass $200bn in 2011, and break $300bn in 2014 and $334.7bn by the end of 2015.

Driving and Cell Phones Do Not Mix

Talking on a cell phone while driving increases the risk of a crash but not nearly as much as text messaging while behind the wheel, according to a report released on Tuesday.

The report by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that texting while driving increased the risk of a crash or a near crash by more than 23 times.

A 17-year-old Columbia High School student is out on bond for allegedly threatening to blow up the school.

Investigators say Kelsey Davis sent a bomb threat to a teacher via text message using an app that disguised the message with a long distance number.
