Blocking Text While Driving

Smart phone application developed in Hernando blocks text messaging while driving. The chime of an incoming text message can be tough for drivers to resist, even while barreling 70 mph down the interstate or navigating a crowded parking lot.

So when a texting driver drifted into Gary Thomas' lane in Hernando County last spring and nearly ran him off the road, it became clear to him that distracted driving had to stop.

The sunshine came out for the WHIR Networking Event Toronto

By WHIR Happenings

Last night marked the third annual WHIR networking event in Toronto, Canada. This event is always a special one to us, as it takes place in the hometown of Web Host Industry Review headquarters.

It's always fun having our sponsors and some travelling guests visit us on our home turf, and we love getting to spend time with locals we don't always get to see that often.

Android: The Smartphone OS with Multiple Faces

Android is not always the same. About 170 different smartphones run the mobile operating system, but there is no one single standard.

Everything can change from one Android-operated smartphone to the next: interface, functions, options available. The one thing that stays the same: with an Android-enabled smartphone, you're only a click away from the Internet.

Thus, when you're out shopping for an Android phone, keep an eye on the software you're buying as well as the hardware.

A whole host of manufacturers have decided to make use of the open source software, designed under the leadership of Google. HTC, SonyEricsson, Samsung and Motorola have all brought out Android phones. Nonetheless, compared to the iPhone, Android is a latecomer to the game.

Google announced in November 2007 that it would develop an operating system based on the Linux operating system in conjunction with an alliance of 30 technology and mobile phone giants. By that point, Apple had already sold millions of its iPhones.

But, thanks to widespread support, Android phones quickly took off and have, in the meantime, become a true alternative to the iPhone.

The main difference between Apple's iOS and Android lies in the openness of the Google software. Phone manufacturers can use it and alter it as they wish.

"They have the option to come out as individuals," says Dirk Waasen, chief editor of the German technology magazine Connect. Thus, HTC has laid its Sense interface on top of Android, while Garmin and Asus have made a combination of satellite-navigation device and smartphone with their Nuvifone.

For the pure Android system, shoppers have to seek out the Nexus S, produced by Samsung under contract with Google.

Despite the varied interfaces, the functions of all Android phones are similar. The software stands out because of its free navigation tool, integrated as the Maps service starting with version 1.6....

Interview with Site5 CEO Ben Welch-Bolen

On May 5th, 2009, I sat down with Ben Welch-Bolen from Site5 to talk about reseller hosting.

Interview conducted by Chris Lloyd of Resellerguide.com

Chris: Hi, what is your position at Site5 and what does that cover?

Ben Welch-Bolen: My official title is CEO of Site5. On a day to day basis I'm involved in just about every department at Site5 and you will even see me on twitter and our forums helping customers. Long term I help plan our future projects, improvements to our hosting and services, and the direction of Site5 over the coming months and years to make sure we are providing the best hosting and customer service possible.

Chris: How many resellers do you provide hosting for currently?

Ben: Site5 currently provides reseller hosting to around 4,000 customers. The vast majority of those are smaller hosting companies and designers who host their clients sites..

Chris: What type of features do your reseller hosting plans come with?

Ben: We offer our resellers a free billing manager called ClientExec that can handle all signups and setup. All our hosting packages come with cpanel and WHM and a load of features. We give all our resellers RVSkin and Fantastico as well.

Chris: What type of advertising methods does Site5 use to get new customers?

Ben: We use everything we can! We use PPC, SEO, social media, affiliates, and anything we can to get customers to our site and learning about Site5's hosting. We also focus heavily on providing amazing jaw dropping service to our clients so they spread our name for us. We have found that word of mouth about the quality of your hosting and tech support is the easiest way to grow.

Chris: Do you do split testing and landing pages and so on to raise conversions?

Ben: Yes we do, we are finishing putting the finishing touches on our custom built system but it should be ready for it's first tests this week. It is very important for marketing to present visitors with the info need. Forcing visitors to stumble around your website trying to find answers to their questions means you are going to lose them as customers.

Chris: Where are your data centers located?

Ben: Our primary data center is based in Dallas Texas.

Chris: That's great. Thanks for taking a moment to talk to us.

Ben: No problem. Thanks for having me.

Interview with CEO of GreenGeeks and TigerSites

Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Trey Gardner, CEO of GreenGeeks and TigerSites. Here's what Trey had to say:

Chris Lloyd from ResellerGuide.com: What's your title and how does that translate into the day-to-day operations for GreenGeeks and Tigersites?

Trey: I am the CEO of both Green Geeks and Tigersites. As far as the day to day operations for both brands I am involved in all of the areas. I work with the sales and marketing team to make sure that we are getting good exposure in the marketplace as well as make sure that new clients are approved and receive all of their account login information. In addition I work with the technical support and server administration departments to make sure that client's issues are handled by our technicians in an expeditious manner and that are servers are operating at their optimal levels.

Chris: Can you tell us what kind of plans you offer?

Trey: We offer 1 all encompassing web hosting plan for the general public and we offer 5 reseller web hosting plans for web site designers and developers. The General Public plan offers unlimited disk space and bandwidth as well as the ability to host an unlimited amount of domains and emails. It comes with cPanel, the world's #1 web hosting control panel as well as the free Fantastico script library which has web site favorite scripts like Drupal, Wordpress, Joomla and many others. Also included with the plan is a free domain name and 2 free web site template builders which are great for novices. The plan costs are $95.40 for a 1 year term and $166.80 for a 2 year term. Tigersites offers the same package as Green Geeks.

Our reseller program was recently launch and is great for web developers and designers who help manage the web sites of their clients. There are 5 packages to choose from and rates vary between $.95/domain per month all the way down to $.39/domain per month. The servers are 300% green just like the servers at Green Geeks and carry all of the features carried for Green Geeks customers.

Chris: Tell us about what green web hosting really means.

Trey: Green energy web site hosting is web hosting without establishing a carbon footprint or by offsetting your carbon footprint. The reason why this is such a big deal for our industry is because it is estimated that by the year 2020 our web hosting industry will be as large of a environmental polluter as the airline industry. Web servers use huge amounts of electricity, they run all the time and they run hot so they also need huge cooling fans to keep them cold to run efficiently. These huge fans also use large amount of electricity.

There are many ways to offset your carbon foot print in web hosting including using wind energy credits to offset the energy you pull from the grid, use solar power to lower the amount of energy you need to pull from the grid during daylight hours as well as configuring the servers so that they run more efficiently using less energy, running cooler and needing less of the fans cooling power. At Green Geeks, TigerSites and our reseller company we are actually carbon negative which means we not only lower our carbon footprint but we actually put more carbon reducing power into the grid by purchasing 3 times the wind energy credits needed to offset our use. In addition we modify our servers so that they run cooler using less energy than other companies servers.

Chris: Are there web hosts out there claiming to be green but not walking the walk? No need to name names.

Trey: I would rather be an optimist when it comes to the trends in web hosting pushing more towards going green. We have had many web hosting companies contact us and ask us how we do what we do to be more eco friendly and we are actually fine with helping our competition become greener. I have heard from customers and environmental advocates that they have run across numerous companies out there who claim to be eco friendly but who don't look to employ and real eco friendly initiatives, they are green in name alone. I don't waste my time checking up on these so called green companies to see what they do, my focus is to forge ahead with my own initiatives and let the marketplace follow. Consumers are savvy and eventually they will root out these companies standards and force them to go green in more than just name or risk losing that business to us and the other true green web hosts.

Chris: What types of advertising methods are you using to promote your brands?

Trey: We employ mainly online marketing for building our sales and to promote our brands. Our best consumers are people who are web savvy and are looking for web hosting or who are looking to change from some hosting company which are not servicing their needs. We market in web sites, blogs and news web sites.

Chris: Where are you datacenters located?

Trey: Our data center is located in Chicago with offices there as well as Toronto and Los Angeles. We are looking at opening more locations over the next year as well.

Chris: Are you planning on a controlled growth or is it pedal to the metal?

Trey: I would love to say pedal to the metal but I have been with other web hosting companies before this one and some have had that "at all costs" mentality. They would try to grow as fast as they could and what I saw with this type of focus were tons of problems. They would short change their employees and purchase sub standard equipment to make room for more marketing dollars to drive more sales. Turnover was high and problems with the servers where your customers web sites reside were a daily occurrence.
At Green Geeks we higher good, smart people and we treat them well, we don't like turnover, in addition we buy only top of the line high quality web servers to make sure our clients accounts run fast and have great uptime. Our customer service department proportionally gets far more calls from customers who are novices and who need instructions on how to do something than we do about any sort of server issue. So far we have been able to grow at a steady pace but with increased sales volumes month over month. We like to push the marketing of Green Geeks not only to acquire customers and grow but to also influence the marketplace into being more eco friendly. We will always look towards growth as building the business and building the awareness.

Chris: Are you going to be at HostingCon in August?

Trey: I may go to Hosting Con in August, I have been before and it is a great place to learn more about the industry trends and to work on partnerships. I also enjoy my daily work activity here at Green Geeks as well and there is a lot to do. Depending upon the participants at the event I may go or may send one of our system administrators, we'll have to see.

Chris: I'll use this question as a vehicle for you to freestyle. Let our readers know everything they need to know about GreenGeeks and Tigersites.

Trey: Sounds good. Here is my personal guarantee to anyone out there who is thinking of signing up with either Green Geeks, TigerSites or our reseller program. I guarantee that if you ever have an issue with our company or any of our employees I am going to get involved. I have been the quality assurance director at other web hosting companies and made sure that if there was anything wrong that our techs could not fix or something wrong with one of our employees that they could get to me and I got things resolved. We don't have a quality assurance director at Green Geeks, Tigersites or our reseller company because we don't need one, I am the guy and the buck stops with me. If you ever have a serious problem with our company ask for me by name.

In addition I want to plead with any web hosting company or any customer of a web hosting company out there to go green. The thought that the servers who run you the customers web sites and which run our web hosting businesses might turn into as big of an environmental catastrophe should be abhorrent to everyone out there. To quote Ben Franklin, "We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately."

Peace, good luck with your web site projects and go green!
Trey Gardner

Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. We like what you guys are doing and wish you the best of luck with GreenGeeks and TigerSites.

BlackBerry 'Apollo' gets manhandled on camera (video)

It's not exactly the most exciting device in RIM's pipeline, but the Curve "Apollo" is shaping a solid workhorse of a BlackBerry. The still-unannounced smartphone popped up on Tinh te, with the Vietnamese tech showing off some solid hands-on time with the device, putting it through its paces on video, and ending up genuinely impressed with the aesthetics and speed of the hardware. According to the site the new Curve is 11mm thick (a couple millimeters thinner than the 8900 it's juxtaposed with), packs a 800Mhz Marvell Tavor CPU MG-1 processor, and has a touch-insensitive 480 x 360 screen. Swipe that thumb touchpad after the break for a video tour of the phone, then dig the source link for more close up images.

It is common knowledge that in case of emergency, you call 911. But what if you can not call out?

What if you are in a hostage situation, or hiding from a burglar in a closet at home? Such questions have floated around local law enforcement agencies for years as wireless phones continue to flood the market.

Taking advantage of the latest trends in technology, Marion County, Fla., has become the latest in the country to accept distress calls via text message. By texting a message to a Sheriffs Office phone number, residents who are in danger can reach emergency responders through the Communication Center.

Saving Money on Cellular

The recession has prompted consumers to re-think their cell phone plans, whether it is ditching contracts for pre-paid options, cutting back on extras like Internet service and texting, or cutting mobile phone service entirely, according to a Thursday report from the New Millennium Research Council (NMRC).

Emergency SMS Messages

The UKs telecoms regulator Ofcom has proposed a voluntary trial, enabling people to send a text message to the UKs emergency services which should be made mandatory in the country.

The proposal forms a part of a wider consultation on changes to Ofcom?s regulations that need to reflect new European law that comes into effect on 25 May, 2011.

As per the new European regulations, access to the Emergency services for disabled people must be as close to that delivered to other consumers as the technology will allow. While the emergency text scheme does have limitations, such as taking longer to converse by text than by phone, it offers greater equivalence than current alternatives.

Telecom Providers Protected

By a vote of 293 to 129, the House of Representatives passed a bill meant to protect telecom companies from being sued for eavesdropping. The Senate is expected to approve the bill sometime next week.

Lawmakers have crafted a compromise on a bill that would extend controversial eavesdropping legislation and add provisions meant to protect telecommunications companies from private lawsuits, including several already under way.

Ending months of negotiations, the House of Representatives on Friday passed a bill that shields cooperating telecommunications providers from invasion of privacy lawsuits and extends the powers of government agencies to order wiretaps without a judge-issued warrant.

The House passed the update to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) by a vote of 293 to 129. All but one of those voting against the bill were Democrats.

For Coca-Cola, Text Messaging Is Top Mobile Priority

SMS text messaging may seem old hat as a marketing tool compared to newer technologies like QR codes or augmented reality, but it should still form the base of mobile marketing programs, according to Tom Daley, group manager of strategy and planning at The Coca-Cola Company.

If you want to reach every consumer on the planet, texting is the way to do that, said Daly, speaking Friday at MediaPost's Mobile Summit conference in Miami. To underscore his point, he noted that 2.3 trillion text messages were sent worldwide last year. And as one of the world's most pervasive consumer brands, Coca-Cola is always interested in reaching as wide an audience as possible.

So one of the buzzes I have seen in the 100% uptime guarantee. People say it is impossible to have 100% uptime and that this is a shady deal. The fact that a hosting company is promising you that you will not have any downtime when it comes to hardware is of course absurd. Hardware [...]

Tips to Control Mobile Spending

Are you one of those who feel dizzy each time you look at your monthly mobile bill? Well, join the club. No matter how hard many of us try to curb our bills, we invariably end up in the same situation month after month wondering where we went wrong. Paypal v. Google: a tawdry tale of trade secret misappropriation

Google and its poached Paypal employees got sued for trade secret misappropriation yesterday, but we didn't know the dirty details until now. A peek at PayPal's complaint reveals there's a bit more to the story. Apparently, Paypal and Google were in talks last year to use PayPal for payments in the Android Market. Osama Bedier was in charge of those negotiations for PayPal in October of 2010, when the deal was supposed to close, but was allegedly interviewing for a mobile payment position at Google at the same time (holy conflict of interest, Batman!). The complaint claims that Bedier initially rebuffed El Goog's advances, told PayPal of the job offer and professed that he would stay, but jumped ship a month later (bringing some PayPal coworkers with him) after being recruited by Stephanie Tilenius and the almighty dollar. Once it hired Osama, Google reportedly put the brakes on the PayPal deal and created Google Wallet. Then Google, Bedier, and Tilenius got slapped with a lawsuit. A brief rundown of the legal claims awaits you after the break.

Why you should attend the Atlanta WHIR Networking Event

By WHIR Happenings

2011 is almost halfway over, and if you haven't attended a WHIR Networking Event yet this year, we encourage you to check out the calendar and see if you can make it out to one.

While we always get a ton of great feedback from our sponsors (who we always thank incessantly, as without their financial support there would be no WHIR events!), recently we've been receiving some really great input from some recent and new attendees who were at our Chicago and Toronto events.

Cell Phone Etiquette

Todays society is all about being connected 24-7. Cell phones now provide instant access to anyone and everyone, from corporate executives to housewives and children alike. While cellular connectivity is a comfort to some, it can be rude and disruptive to others. You may wish to be available at all times, but there are some times when it is simply not appropriate to use your cell phone.

Also, cell phones should not be treated as status symbols, and should not be paraded out simply to impress others. Regardless of how new and impressive your cell phone may be, dragging it out in a public setting is seldom going to win you any fans.

Follow these simple cell phone guidelines to strike a balance between accessibility and consideration for others...

Donating Via Text

In the last couple of years, the practice of charity in the face of disaster has changed. Instead of giving online or making a phone call, people - especially the more wired digital generation - are giving via text. It is simple: Send a text to a specific number and you automatically give a set donation amount, usually $10, to an organization. Since last Friday, the American Red Cross has received nearly $1.6 million in text donations for Japan. But there are downsides to text donations that you should think about carefully before you hit SEND.
