HTC shipped 9.3 million mobile communications devices in the first quarter -- up 175.7 percent from one year earlier, noted Roberta Cozza, a principal analyst at Gartner.
"They are becoming an important vendor for the carriers," Cozza said in a telephone interview Monday. "HTC has managed more than anyone else to create offerings that really stand out (because of extra software) they put on top of Android."
Based on Google's Android 2.3 platform, Gingerbread, the HTC EVO 3D sports a 4.3-inch display, a 1.2-GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and dual five-megapixel cameras. The smartphone promises to take the mobile multimedia experience to a new level by giving consumers the ability to capture, share and view glasses-free 3D video at 4G speeds.
Gartner believes 3D support will eventually become a requirement for all high-end smartphones and tablets. At its present stage of development, however, it's unclear whether today's fledgling glasses-free 3D will gain popularity right away.
"I think manufacturers are trying to find whatever they can in order to stand out from the crowd -- particularly the Android OEMs," Cozza said. "You also have to consider what type of 3D content is really available. There are three or four 3D games on the new LG 3D device."
The technology should eventually gain significant market traction as additional 3D content becomes available and more advanced 3D technologies are perfected, Cozza observed. "Different companies are investing in how to give consumers a true 3D experience on smaller screens," she noted.
