Texting in Class

College students say their professors would be shocked to know just how often they send text messages during lectures, and one researcher has offered a simple and stringent solution: Give failing grades to text-happy students.

Nine in 10 students said in a Wilkes University study released this month that they have sent and received texts during class, although a much smaller portion of students believe educators should allow unlimited texting in class as long as it does not disturb others.

Super Bowl Text Ad Scores Big

Dozens of ads during the Super Bowl guided viewers to post a Twitter message, like a Facebook page or log on to a corporate Web site. But only one ad asked viewers to send a text message.

More than 1.7 million viewers followed through and sent a text, according to the National Football League, which conceived the ad for the Superbowl Broadcast and released the text message data on Thursday.

Tether for iPhone returns as an HTML5-powered subscription service (video)

We're still not sure how iTether temporarily snuck into the App Store the first time around, but the developers behind that software have returned with a new version that skirts Apple's guidelines entirely. While Tether.com has standard apps available for BlackBerry and Android users, the new approach on iOS relies on creating an ad-hoc network from a PC, and then visiting the appropriate webpage on the iPhone. Log in to the website, and the company's "patent-pending" software does the job of tying the two connections together wirelessly through the magic of HTML5, no jailbreaking or other hackery needed. The cost for the service is $30 a year, although it's currently available for the first year at $15 -- no free trials, and of course what happens to your data plan is between you and your carrier. Report Glucose Readings via SMS

Researchers from Denver Health and Hospital Authority, a medical school, found that patients with diabetes who received text message reminders and prompts throughout the week reported increased accountability, social support, and awareness of health information. The Researchers found that 79 percent of the participants responded to more than 50 percent of the prompts, according to the study?s results which were recently published in the American Journal of Managed Care. About 66 percent provided glucose readings when their care provided prompted them by text message, compared to the 12 percent that provided readings at two previous clinic visits.

Sexting a New Adult Activity

In 2009, the Pew Center for Internet and American Life published survey findings that 4 percent of adolescents 12 to 17 years old had sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images or videos of themselves to someone else via text message.

That sparked a sexting panic over the unsettling implications of young people engaging in this type of illicit interaction, as well as legal issues involving the cell phone-transmitted photos that could be deemed child pornography.

Consequently, much of the media attention to sexting has focused solely on adolescent behavior, yet the act of sexting is not limited to teens.

Did you wait too long to pull the trigger on a pre-order for Apple's newest iPad? Well, it looks like you'll have to join the rest of the US-based iStragglers and settle for a later ship date. The Cupertino-born slate, initially set for a March 16th release, now appears to have been pushed back to the 19th, forcing prospective online buyers to seek out any remaining stock at brick and mortar outlets on launch day. While this is by no means an indication that the company's sold out of its third-generation tablet wares, consider it a last call for the early adopter train.

MythTV turns 0.25, is actually ten in human years

Perhaps it's to help it keep that start-up vibe but, for whatever reason, on the eve of its tenth birthday MythTV is about to release version 0.25. That's right, it's the two bit anniversary of one of our favorite open source HTPC programs. So, what's new in this edition? A lot. In fact, for full details you'll have to hit up the changelog at the source. But, we can guarantee that the new MythTV Services API will open up a whole new frontier to devs. If you're looking for more, well, don't worry -- the creators have also added support for IPv6, AirPlay, HTTP Live Streaming, and DirectX acceleration. Update: One more major feature added to 0.25 is the support for CableCARD tuners. That capability was added to 0.24 through patches, but this next version supports it out of the proverbial box.

Sony Tablet P gets rooted, does it effortlessly

For anyone that's dabbled long enough with Sony's dual-screen tablet as-is, we've got good news. The device can now be rooted and -- better still -- it's not all that difficult. Pocketables forum member RayIczr goes over the method, which requires an ADB installer and a Sony Tablet Root program. Add in some allowances for the USB debug mode and unknown program sources and you'll soon arrive at an unrooted Tablet P. More details and due praise can be found at the source below.

Police say a western New York tow truck driver was texting on one cell phone while talking on another when he slammed into a car and crashed into a swimming pool.

Niagara County sheriff's deputies say 25-year-old Nicholas Sparks of Burt admitted he was texting and talking when his flatbed truck hit the car Wednesday morning in Lockport, which is outside Buffalo.

Apple reveals next-generation apps for the new iPad: Infinity Blade: Dungeons, SketchBook, SkyGamblers (video)

While Apple's ensured all of its home-baked apps are making the most of the new iPad's retina display and new A5X chipset, it also had a handful of third-party app developers ready to show what the new hardware's capable. First up was Namco, who revealed the iOS-exclusive SkyGamblers, an Ace Combat-styled jet combat simulator. There looks to be a whole load of detail crammed into both the plane models and background -- something all those extra pixels can certainly help with and something we'll want to take a closer look at when it lands later this month. Taking a different approach, Autodesk's SketchBook app took the opportunity to show off the level of detail its sketches were now capable of, alongside a new engine for the ink. Now, we're not exactly sure what that entails, but we're sure it's going to make our works of art really zing. The app can even export images larger than 100 megapixels and will be out in April. Finally, Infinity Blade developers Epic Games took to the stage to unveil Dungeons -- the next iteration of the swiping and slashing gladiatorial battler. It appears the battle system has been recast once again and HDR lighting ensures the game will arrive dripping in optical honey. We'll be taking up swords to get a hands-on with these very soon.

Text Messaging Tip Line at School

The city of Brockton has launched a text messaging tip service in its public school system. On Wednesday, students in both middle and alternative high school were encouraged to begin using a text and web-based tip line to let school officials and police know about problems with bullying.  According to Jocelyn Meek, the communications officer for Brockton Public Schools, the system is an anonymous way for students to share their concerns on a variety of troubling issues.

Bionic Lenses

Scientists have taken another step towards creating the bionic man of sci-fi lore with a wearable display mounted in a contact lens.

A team from the University of Washington and Aalto University in Finland managed to squeeze all the necessary equipment into a wearable lens that could display information right before your eyes.

This consists of an antenna which draws on power sent by an external source, as well as an integrated circuit which is able to store energy for use in a transparent sapphire chip which holds a blue LED.

Apple new iPad hands-on! (update: video!)

Here she is -- the iPad HD! Er, new iPad. Breaking away from the numerical tracking system used before (and still used in the iPhone range), Apple has decided to highlight the most major change in its newest slate by simply dubbing it "new." By and large, the new guy is the same as the old guy (Home button included), but with a few nice amenities that could very well convince OG iPad owners to upgrade. Upon touching the HD variant, it's not the overall form factor that grabs us -- it's the screen. Given that we're unashamed Pixel Density Enthusiasts 'round these parts, seeing a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution display in the same area as the prior 'Pads is stunning. Nearly two months ago to the day, ASUS wowed our entire CES trailer with a reported 1,920 x 1,200 display on the TF700T; this, however, is something that really needs to be ogled to truly appreciate. In fact, the first viewing conjured up familiar feelings -- ones that came to light when placing the iPhone 4 beside the iPhone 3G for the first time.

Unsurprisingly, Apple has managed to produce something that's truly beautiful to look at, and while we've yet to see the full potential of having this many pixels on a 9.7-inch slate, we're guessing a cadre of game developers are already hard at work in order to remedy that. Beyond being dazzling from a density standpoint, colors are sharp and accurate, and viewing angles are predictably ridiculous; even taking a peek from an extreme side angle gives way to a fairly solid image with next to no washout.

Texas Tech self-imposes NCAA sanctions for text messaging violations.

Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach has been gone for over a year but he is still getting in trouble.

The school acknowledged in a press release Friday their self-imposed sanctions following the institution?s discovery of text messaging violations within the athletics program have been accepted by the NCAA?s Committee on Infractions.

Report Glucose Readings via SMS

Researchers from Denver Health and Hospital Authority, a medical school, found that patients with diabetes who received text message reminders and prompts throughout the week reported increased accountability, social support, and awareness of health information. The Researchers found that 79 percent of the participants responded to more than 50 percent of the prompts, according to the study?s results which were recently published in the American Journal of Managed Care. About 66 percent provided glucose readings when their care provided prompted them by text message, compared to the 12 percent that provided readings at two previous clinic visits.

New Skype For Mac Update Finally Includes Full Screen Mode, Automatic Updates

I lean on Skype (and Macs) pretty heavily, so when a fairly substantial update for the VOIP/messaging service goes live, my ears tend to perk up. The new Skype 5.6 update has me especially tickled -- it's now available for folks of the Mac persuasion, and it thankfully packs a handful of bugfixes as well as a slew of new (and arguably overdue) features.

Texting While Driving Ban Not Working

Massachusetts drivers are still sending and reading text messages, despite a statewide ban on texting behind the wheel.

Between the Sept. 30 start of the ban and the end of May, 733 citations for sending texts - about 3 per day - have been issued by police.

LG Optimus Vu launches in Korea, gets priced

LG's 5-inch smartphone has finally arrived -- at least over in Korea. While 4:3 ratio display raised a few eyebrows during its debut at MWC, the IPS display, lightweight frame and stylus has us chasing after a review model to give it the full run-down. Anyone in LG's homeland can beat us to the punch -- it's now on sale priced just under the Galaxy Note, a device that's been around for a few months. Expect to pay 990,000 won ($890) for a carrier-free version, but importers should 'note' that they won't be able to take advantage of that built-in TV tuner. We're still sniffing out details on prices and launch dates for the US. Hopefully, the international model will arrive with a rubberdium stylus -- we just want to know what rubberdium is.

Kodak moves to block Apple's latest patent suit from proceeding in federal district court

In a move that's sure to surprise no one, Kodak is fighting Apple's latest round of patent litigation -- a suit that would force Kodak to pause plans to sell up to $2.6 billion in digital imaging patents as a condition of its bankruptcy loan. In documents filed late last week, Kodak argued the dispute should be heard by the same bankruptcy court that's already overseeing its insolvency proceedings. In fact, Kodak's bankruptcy filing back in January caused all pending litigation (from Apple and RIM, among others) to come to a screeching halt, but Apple is nonetheless pushing for a reboot, arguing it's the owner of "a number of valuable patents," including one that could be lost if that planned $2 billion sale goes through. So where might this legal catfight take place? A bankruptcy judge is expected to hear arguments from both sides on Thursday.
