The truth about outages data breaches and other disasters

By Lou Honick

Outages and data breaches, based on Amazon and Sony Playstation Network, are the topic of the day, and to a lesser extent, things like the Media Temple DNS outage. Things like this are always making news. Rackspace has had some high profile datacenter issues, The Planet had a datacenter explosion, Gmail goes down from time to time, high profile sites like Mastercard got hit with a massive DDOS, and popular electronics accessory site Monoprice had a serious data breach. And those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. The fact is that these things happen. Why do people not want to admit this? I think web hosts share a good portion of the blame for this perception. In a competitive industry, with everyone looking to get an edge, the ante has been upped as far as it can go - a pledge of 100% uptime. In credit card processing I talk about the race to the bottom where everyone can beat anyone else's price by a few basis points until we are basically giving the service away at Interchange (Visa/Mastercard cost). In hosting, it's a race to the top, where the race ended a long time ago and everyone is forced to promise the impossible. It's cutthroat and despicable, when I post an article about the Amazon outage and I get a web host posting an advertisement in the comments saying "Try us if you are unhappy with the Amazon downtime." Really? Do you honestly think you'll never have an outage? Do you think you're more reliable than Amazon and their billions in resources? Even if you manage to steal customers away using this tactic, and web hosts have been doing it as long as I can remember, it is an awfully flimsy house of cards you are building. What are those customers going to think when it is your turn to pay the piper? And don't kid yourself, your day is coming. You might not make the Wall Street Journal with news of your outage, but it will happen and it is going to be painful. Trust me, I know, I was part of PLENTY of painful outages at HostMySite.com. It was a big driver in my decision to sell the company. At some point you worry that the next big incident will be it. Will be the end. Because even though it won't be, the immense drive for the impossible takes its toll on you. Not only will your customers be upset, but your competitors will descend on you like vultures. DDOS attacks, fiber cuts, data breaches, hacked servers, transformer failures, generator fiascos, HVAC problems, been there, done that. And if you're in the hosting industry, odds are you've been through it too and tried to keep a lid on as much of it as possible.

So what's the point of my post here? We need to get realistic. As customers. As web hosts. As users of websites and online services. Things happen, sites go down. Our lives are better for having these services, and not much worse off by being without them for a few hours or days. Life and business go on. We need to take responsibility when it comes to sharing our personal information, and take care to only share what is necessary. Furthermore, we need to demand that websites we use only ask for what is absolutely necessary, and we need to have a plan in place to safeguard ourselves for the time WHEN that data is breached. If you choose to put your information out there, your assumption should be it's going to really get out there. I'm not blaming the users of Amazon EC2 for not building their apps correctly, and I'm not blaming Amazon for a relatively unforeseeable calamity. It is a shared responsibility, and furthermore that responsibility flows downstream to the affected users who need to understand that this is a fact of life and move on. Can things get better? Sure. Do we already have an insanely great, awesomely reliable Internet infrastructure available to us from a plethora of excellent providers? Absolutely. Communicate, fix, learn, improve, and then just move on. The great thing is that time does generally heal all wounds.

Private Equity Firms - You Found the Hosting Sector UK2

By Tom Millitzer

First congratulations to Ditlev Bredahl, now former UK2 Group's CEO...over the last 5 years he led the company on an M&A voyage that included UK and US hosting firms. I guess the M&A strategy paid off as Britt PE firm TSB Development Capital bought a majority interest in UK2 firm in a 47 million pound sterling ($77 m USD, 53 m Euro) transaction.

Ditlev signaled a change a few weeks ago as he bowed out of a keynote address at WHD in Germany. I started to smell the deal last year as he indicated to me he would soon be transitioning to full time CEO at OnApp. We are looking toward his continued success.

Panasonic, Yahoo, more admit defeat, sign deal with Klausner

It's easy to mock the little guy when he takes a handful of giant corporations to court. Such litigious overzealousness usually gets tangled up or tossed out altogether -- Klausner Technologies, however, is laughing all the way to the bank, with a stellar track record taking on some of tech's biggest names over the past few years. To date, the company has scored wins in visual voicemail patent battles with Apple, Google, Verizon, LG, and Vonage -- the company also struck a deal with Sprint, though presumably with less teeth-pulling. This week, Klausner added four more big wins to the list, inking deals with Panasonic, Yahoo, Qwest Communications, and Avaya in the wake of suits against the tech firms. The company still has ongoing battles with RIM and Cisco that will hopefully stay civil. We'd hate to see someone send a visual voicemail they'd regret later.

Panasonic, Yahoo, more admit defeat, sign deal with Klausner originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 13:13:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

TomTom Admits Police Used Data for Speed Traps

TomTom NV, Europe's largest navigation device maker, went into damage control mode Wednesday after it emerged that Dutch police have been using data collected from drivers who use the company's products to set speed traps.

Earlier, TomTom had reported weak first quarter earnings in which it cut 2011 sales forecasts and said it was seeking to compensate for a decline in demand for personal navigation devices by growing service revenues -- including selling traffic data to governments.

National newspaper Algemeen Dagblad reported that police had obtained the information from the government and used it to set targeted speed traps, prompting angry reactions from TomTom users.

In an e-mailed apology, Chief Executive Harold Goddijn said the company sold the anonymous data believing it would be used to improve safety or relieve traffic bottlenecks.

"We never foresaw this kind of use and many of our clients are not happy about it," he wrote.

He promised licensing agreements would "prevent this type of use in the future."

TomTom reported first quarter net profit of (EURO)11 million ($16 million), up from (EURO)3 million in the same period a year earlier. It also reported worse-than-expected sales of (EURO)265 million, a one percent decline.

The company cut its minimum full year sales target from (EURO)1.52 billion to (EURO)1.425 billion. It said it now expects the market for personal navigation devices to shrink by at least 15 percent in 2011 amid poor consumer demand and competition from substitutes such as tablet computers and smart phones. It said it had won market share from major direct rival, Garmin Ltd., in the first quarter.

TomTom shares closed 3.1 percent lower at (EURO)6.112.

TomTom is seeking to diversify its offerings away from the ailing market for its flagship product, dashboard-mounted portable devices. Around half of its revenues now come from automakers who incorporate TomTom products into their cars and...

They first started in 1994 and are therefore almost as old as the Web itself. They were very effective back then, with the original ad garnering a 78% click-through rate (CTR)! I guess from there we had nowhere to go but down. Nowadays banner ads get on average 0.2% CTR meaning for every 1,000 ads that are served up only 2 people click on them. Fuel Cells on the Horizon

Laptop, cell phone and iPod owners tired of having their devices run out of charge after a few hours have been patiently waiting for the next portable power source to arrive.

Tiny fuel cells, powered by combustible liquids or gasses, have long been touted as the eventual solution. Potentially, they could power a laptop for days between refills.

But fuel cells have perennially remained a year or two away from reaching the market as companies have worked on making them small, cheap and long-lasting, while making sure they do not overheat. The U.S. government removed a key roadblock this year when the Department of Transportation amended its hazardous materials regulations to allow cells with methanol, butane or formic acid to be carried on airplanes. Methanol and butane are flammable, and formic acid is corrosive.

Steps Businesses Can Take to Go Green

A business that makes the decision to be environmentally-conscious will often promote goodwill among potential customers, while making the world a better place for future generations. Many businesses hesitate to adopt green practices because they fear it will hurt their bottom line and negatively impact profits. But many eco-conscious businesses discover that they can actually save money and bring in new customers who specifically patronize companies that actively make an effort to be environmentally friendly. Many customers may even be willing to pay a bit more for a product or service from a company that is green.

Many businesses already do things that are eco-friendly, not necessarily because they are sensitive to green living, but simply to save money. That does not, however, diminish the value of their green efforts. The trick for businesses is to be eco-friendly without compromising profitability.

(Fly Or Die) Can TweetDeck?s New iPhone App Survive A Twitter Acquisition

TweetDeck's new iPhone app came out a couple days ago. It is completely redesigned from the ground up and looks more like it's Android cousin than the first TweetDeck for iPhone. Instead of cramming as much as possible into an iPhone screen, TweetDeck stripped everything out but the essentials. The result is a spare mobile stream reader that packs a lot of punch. We take a look at the new TweetDeck for IPhone in this episode of Fly or Die, along with Soundtracking, and Zapd. As usual, the CEO behind one of these products appears as a surprise guest during the show. With Twitter rumored to be negotiating a $50 million acquisition of TweetDeck to keep it out of the hands of Bill Gross' UberMedia, it is not clear whether this brand new product will survive such a deal. After all, Twitter has its own iPhone client, among others. It doesn't need two.

Chrome OS machines leaked in bug reports: Acer netbook and touch-friendly Seaboard

Acer Chrome OS NetbookPlowing through bug reports is a reliable way to dig up juicy morsels of info, and thanks to that timeless tactic we've got some specs on a pair of unannounced Chrome OS devices. First up is a netbook from Acer codenamed ZGB which, according to a recently filed report, will have a 1366 x 768 panel, presumably in the 10 to 12 inch range. We also know that you can hook up an external display to it via an HDMI port powered by an encoder chip from Chrontel. Since AMD's Fusion netbook platform supports HDMI natively, we can also safely assume that the ZGB will be running the web-only OS on an Atom processor. That's where the details end for now but, hey, it's better than nothing.

The other device, Seaboard, has been floating around the Chrome OS flaw depot for some time, but reports are finally starting to reveal some tantalizing details. We now know that it is powered by a Tegra 2 and sports a touchscreen -- the perfect place to test out those finger-friendly tweaks we've heard so much about. There are also mentions of a "lid switch" and a physical keyboard, indicating it may be a convertible or something in the vein of the Eee Pad Slider rather than a pure slate. The hybrid form factor would make perfect sense since it will house a pair of USB ports and an HDMI jack, which could make for a rather chunky tablet. Obviously, neither of these devices are confirmed yet (and Seaboard is most likely being used for internal testing only) but at least we've got a better idea of what to expect when the browser-based OS comes to consumers later this year.

Government Working on Reducing Cell Phone Fees

The government is quietly negotiating to help cell phone customers avoid expensive fees when they cancel contracts with wireless companies.

Cell phone companies routinely charge customers $175 or more for quitting their service early. Under a proposal to the Federal Communications Commission, the wireless industry would give consumers the opportunity to cancel service without any penalty for up to 30 days after they sign a cell phone contract or until 10 days after they receive their first bill.

Buzz Off, Google Buzz

Two days ago, we removed the Google Buzz button from the top and bottom of each post on TechCrunch. No one noticed. Not a single person said a word about it. It wasn't until earlier today when I tweetedabout it that we got some feedback on the change (most of it being: "oh, I didn't even notice"). As I tweeted, that in and of itself says a lot. The issue of Buzz being a viable sharing platform used to be somewhat of a hot-button issue. When I wrote a post last March noting that traffic coming our way from Buzz appeared to be less than that of a dead man, FriendFeed, many folks got up in arms. It turns out, my data was flawed ? but it wasn't necessarily wrong. You see, since Buzz runs within Gmail, which defaults to HTTPS, it scrubs the referrer data before sending the traffic our way. So,conveniently, the only way to measure Buzz traffic was to infer it. Like a black hole.

Recycling Cell Phones

We recycle our soda cans and our newspapers, so why do not we recycle our cell phones?

U.S. consumers who bought new mobile phones recycled the old ones in the fourth quarter of 2007 at double the rate of the third quarter, a market research firm said Tuesday. But the overall number of recyclers remained low at less than one in 10.

Interview with Luke Kendall of Just Host

Interview with Luke Kendall of Just Host

Chris: Hi Luke, can you tell me more about your position at Just Host and explain to our readers what work your perform at Just Host?
Luke: Well my official role here at Just Host and the one you will find on our website is Marketing Manager however, my work here isn't just confined to the 4 walls of the marketing department. I often deal with customers directly who have ideas and suggestions on how our services could be improved. This could be anything from adding new tools inside our control to expanding and improving the help center on our website.
Chris: You have been providing shared hosting for some time now, what made you decide on offering a reseller service?
Luke: We have always allowed customers to host unlimited domain names but not from separate control panels. Customers would often ask us if this were possible and of course without a reseller account it would not be. Reseller hosting has always been something we wanted to offer our customers, we were just waiting for the right moment and 2 months ago that moment came when we announced the launch of our reseller service. Today we already have over 1,500 active resellers hosting with us and we haven't even entered month 3 yet!
Chris: What methods of advertising has Just Host been involved in?
Luke: When we first launched the company we advertised everywhere, from magazines to online directories we were there. This gave us our name, everyone in the industry had heard of us and we had a few thousand customers behind us. Now focus on areas we get the best response from including our in-house affiliate program which awards customers with $60 by referring a friend to Just Host.
Chris: How successful has your affiliate program been for you?
Luke: Our affiliate program has been hugely successful, we currently have over 16,000 active affiliates who have referred one or more customers to Just Host.
Chris: Let's go back to reseller web hosting for a minute, why should someone choose Just Host over any other reseller hosting provider? What do you do differently?
Luke: Our reseller service was built with ease of use in mind. Reseller web hosting is undoubtedly more complex than shared hosting so we wanted to end up with a product that anyone could use. From start to finish our trained techs will walk you through the process of setting up your account. We also extended our help center which now includes a handful of reseller guides and even more video tutorials, helping you familiarize yourself with the WHM control panel. We are also very affordable at just $19.95 a month, this includes plenty of disk space and bandwidth for your needs!
Chris: Tell me about your data center, where is it located?
Luke: Our data center is located in Chicago, IL we have hundreds of servers there, securely hosting over 180,000 websites on high performance, Dell servers.
Chris: Thanks Luke - Finally, what does Just Host have planned for 2010? Can we expect to see any more product launches in the near future?
Luke: Most definitely! We are always busy working on new ideas and we already have something big planned for this year. We don't like to give too much away though so hold tight and we will keep you posted!
Chris: Sounds very promising, please do keep us informed. Thanks for taking the time to speak with us Luke.
Luke: No problem, thanks for having me!

Interview with Site5 CEO Ben Welch-Bolen

On May 5th, 2009, I sat down with Ben Welch-Bolen from Site5 to talk about reseller hosting.

Interview conducted by Chris Lloyd of Resellerguide.com

Chris: Hi, what is your position at Site5 and what does that cover?

Ben Welch-Bolen: My official title is CEO of Site5. On a day to day basis I'm involved in just about every department at Site5 and you will even see me on twitter and our forums helping customers. Long term I help plan our future projects, improvements to our hosting and services, and the direction of Site5 over the coming months and years to make sure we are providing the best hosting and customer service possible.

Chris: How many resellers do you provide hosting for currently?

Ben: Site5 currently provides reseller hosting to around 4,000 customers. The vast majority of those are smaller hosting companies and designers who host their clients sites..

Chris: What type of features do your reseller hosting plans come with?

Ben: We offer our resellers a free billing manager called ClientExec that can handle all signups and setup. All our hosting packages come with cpanel and WHM and a load of features. We give all our resellers RVSkin and Fantastico as well.

Chris: What type of advertising methods does Site5 use to get new customers?

Ben: We use everything we can! We use PPC, SEO, social media, affiliates, and anything we can to get customers to our site and learning about Site5's hosting. We also focus heavily on providing amazing jaw dropping service to our clients so they spread our name for us. We have found that word of mouth about the quality of your hosting and tech support is the easiest way to grow.

Chris: Do you do split testing and landing pages and so on to raise conversions?

Ben: Yes we do, we are finishing putting the finishing touches on our custom built system but it should be ready for it's first tests this week. It is very important for marketing to present visitors with the info need. Forcing visitors to stumble around your website trying to find answers to their questions means you are going to lose them as customers.

Chris: Where are your data centers located?

Ben: Our primary data center is based in Dallas Texas.

Chris: That's great. Thanks for taking a moment to talk to us.

Ben: No problem. Thanks for having me.

Mobile Phone and Fingerprints

Mexico will start a national register of mobile phone users that will include fingerprinting all customers in an effort to catch criminals who use the devices to extort money and negotiate kidnapping ransoms.

Under a new law published on Monday and due to be in force in April, mobile phone companies will have a year to build up a database of their clients, complete with fingerprints. The idea would be to match calls and messages to the phones owners.

Hundreds of people are kidnapped in Mexico every year and the number of victims is rising sharply as drug gangs, under pressure from an army crackdown, seek new income.
