AT&T Simplifying Texting Plans

AT&T confirmed today that it will slim down its text-messaging service plans, offering customers either unlimited messages for a flat monthly fee, or a pay-per-text service.

The company is eliminating its middle-of-the-road option, a plan that allots customers 1,000 text messages for $10 monthly.

Mini quadrotors play Bond, James Bond (video)

This week's TED2012 conference isn't all talk -- sometimes the videos features speak for themselves. Check out this phenomenal one from the University of Pennsylvania starring a number of nano quadrotors playing the James Bond theme by banging percussion, hitting the piano and strumming a guitar. The room in the video has infrared lights and cameras and the 'copters are outfitted with reflectors, making it possible to plot their position. The result is technical wizardary worthy of Q himself. Drivers Will Not Hang Up

A federal study says one in 20 drivers observed at any given moment is holding a mobile phone to his or her ear, and that almost one in 100 can be observed sending a text message or otherwise manipulating a digital device.

At the typical daylight moment, some 13.5 million drivers are on a hand-held phone nationwide, the study says.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released the study Thursday, saying the use of phones while driving is holding steady, and text messaging is growing, despite laws limiting hand-held devices and a tidal wave of publicity about tragedies cause by distracted drivers.

Teenagers and adults say they slip under the radar of law enforcement when they text on cellphones while driving their vehicles.

A state law which became effective Dec. 1, 2010, bans people from driving a motor vehicle while writing or sending an electronic text message.

Based on the amount of citations written for violating the law, many people continue to text and drive.

YouTube Improves Captions With New Formats, Languages, And More

Captions on YouTube videos can't be all that exciting. It's been around since 2006. But apparently caption functionality has been widely extended, according to a blog post by YouTube. The video sharing platform that takes up half the work day for most of us has introduced new languages to YouTube's caption feature. Automatic captions and transcript synchronization are now available for Japanese, Korean and English, and there are over 155 supported languages for manual captions and subtitles. YouTube rentals will also start telling you what subtitles are available to you before you rent.

Teachers and principals at Norwich Free Academy find the constant text-messaging by students to be the most disruptive problem in their classrooms, so now it's their turn.

Adult Texting on the Rise

The number of Americans under the sway of the text message has increased again, says the latest Pew Resarch study called Cell phones and American Adults. Still, as you might expect, adults still trail teens by a the considerable number.

The rise, year-over-year, is quite interesting. About 72 percent of adult cell phone users send and receive text messages; last year at the same time the number was 65 percent. Meanwhile, 87 percent of teen cell phone users text, but the percentage hides a much higher number: teens send and receive about 50 SMS messages per day, while adults send and receive five times less, or about 10.

Olympus board announces chairman and president picks, resigns

Olympus's entire board handed in its resignation this week, but not before picking a new president and chairman to head up the scandal plagued imaging company. Hiroyuki Sasa, from its medical equipment marketing arm, has been named for the president spot, and Yasuyuki Kimoto, who served as an executive for the Olympus-connected Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., has been picked for role of chairman. Both appointments are pending shareholder approval. Sasa, for his part, stated the importance of getting consumers back on board with the company in light recent controversies, telling the press, "My duty is to win back as soon as possible the trust from everyone and repair this damaged brand."

Hands Free

A bill that would impose a fine on motorists in Pennsylvania who use a cell phone without a hands-free device easily cleared a hurdle Monday in the state House of Representatives.

The House gave preliminary approval to the bill, 156-40. A final vote on the bill could happen as early as Tuesday.

Under the bill, a $50 fine would be imposed on anyone talking or sending text messages on a cell phone, or otherwise using an electronic device for most other purposes. Using an electronic navigation system would remain legal, as would calling 911 while driving.

New Verizon Network

Verizon Wireless says it has completed the first calls using a brand-new network that is planned to go live next year, offering faster Internet speeds.

The calls were made Friday in Boston and earlier in Seattle, using cell-tower equipment from Alcatel-Lucent and LM Ericsson AB. Prototype tablet-style handheld devices from LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. dialed in.

The calls used the 700 megahertz frequency band, just recently freed up for cellular use after being assigned to TV stations.

Boston Text Ban

A Boston city councilor is hoping his proposal to ban drivers from sending text messages will spur a statewide ban on a practice most consider dangerous.

John Tobin says he expects his fellow councilors to sign off on the proposal and send it to the mayor by Dec. 16. Mayor Tom Menino, who has already barred city workers from texting while driving, supports the measure.

Texting Growth Surging

Americans punched out more than 110 billion text messages in December 2008, double the number in the last month of 2007, as the shorthand communication becomes a popular alternative to cell phone calls.

The nations 270 million cell phone subscribers each sent out an average of 407 text messages in December 2008, according to government statistics released Tuesday by the Census Bureau. That is more than double the 188 messages sent by the average cell subscriber during the same period in 2007. The figures did not break down the texting by age, but the overall numbers understate the thousands of texts sent each month by many teens ? balanced out by older folks who don't text as much.

For Coca-Cola, Text Messaging Is Top Mobile Priority

SMS text messaging may seem old hat as a marketing tool compared to newer technologies like QR codes or augmented reality, but it should still form the base of mobile marketing programs, according to Tom Daley, group manager of strategy and planning at The Coca-Cola Company.

If you want to reach every consumer on the planet, texting is the way to do that, said Daly, speaking Friday at MediaPost's Mobile Summit conference in Miami. To underscore his point, he noted that 2.3 trillion text messages were sent worldwide last year. And as one of the world's most pervasive consumer brands, Coca-Cola is always interested in reaching as wide an audience as possible.

Mobile Price Wars

The two largest U.S. wireless carriers, Verizon and AT&T, cut their rates on Friday, escalating a price war that began with smaller carriers.

Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. mobile service, said it would cut prices 30 percent for voice customers. It was followed by similar price cuts from its main rival, AT&T Inc.

Google is giving the gift of free wireless Internet to travelers at a host of US airports this holiday season.

The California-based Internet powerhouse said Tuesday that it is working with Boingo Wireless, Advanced Wireless Group, and Airport Marketing Income to turn airports into free Internet hot spots through January 15 of next year.

Regulations to allow campaign contributions by text message are winding their way though a state approval process, and the system is expected to be in place early next year. The new method of giving is intended to encourage younger, tech-savvy donors to get involved in campaigns.

Cell Blocking

Gov. Martin OMalley said Monday he would consider going against federal law to hold a cell-phone jamming demonstration at a Maryland prison to help stop illegal cell phone use by prison inmates, but he hopes that won't be necessary.

O'Malleys spokesman, Rick Abbruzzese, said the administration plans to send a request to the Federal Communications Commission for permission to hold a demonstration, but has not yet. The FCC has said the Communications Act of 1934 doesn't allow state and local agencies to use the technology, which prevents cell tower transmissions from reaching phones.

ViewSonic goes dual-SIM with ViewPhone 4s, 4e and 5e, all packing Android Ice Cream Sandwich

When you're ready, here's yet another load of pre-MWC goodness. This year ViewSonic decided that merely slapping Ice Cream Sandwich on its new ViewPhones isn't good enough, so instead, the company's just-announced 4s, 4e and 5e also come with an extra SIM slot. Starting from the left we have the ViewPhone 4s featuring an impressive 3.5-inch 960 x 640 Super Clear IPS LCD (which, should be very similar to Apple's Retina Display from LG -- rather ironic given the phone's name), along with a five-megapixel camera, a VGA front-facing imager and a 1GHz chip. Pictured in the middle is a similar-looking ViewPhone 4e but packing a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 LCD, a slower processor at 650MHz only, a three-megapixel camera and one extra touch button than its sibling; all of this made with budget in mind, obviously, though somehow ViewSonic's very proud of its 10.3mm thickness.

If 3.5-inch displays aren't your cup of tea then you'll have to jump straight to the 5-inch ViewPhone 5e, but so far all we've been told is its 800 × 480 screen resolution. Could there be more in this dual-SIM beast? Stay tuned to our MWC coverage and you'll know as soon as we do.

FEMA Warning of Text Scam

The Federal Emergency Management Agency - FEMA and Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division have been made aware that fraudulent text messages have been sent to disaster survivors in neighboring states.

The reported text message tells recipients they have a message waiting from FEMA and instructs them to push the star button on their cell phone to obtain information about their federal disaster assistance. A subscription of $9.99 per month is then charged to the owner of the cell phone if the star button is pushed.

Emergency SMS Messages

The UKs telecoms regulator Ofcom has proposed a voluntary trial, enabling people to send a text message to the UKs emergency services which should be made mandatory in the country.

The proposal forms a part of a wider consultation on changes to Ofcom?s regulations that need to reflect new European law that comes into effect on 25 May, 2011.

As per the new European regulations, access to the Emergency services for disabled people must be as close to that delivered to other consumers as the technology will allow. While the emergency text scheme does have limitations, such as taking longer to converse by text than by phone, it offers greater equivalence than current alternatives.

Nielsen found that teens send or receive an average of 3,339 texts per month. Those between the ages of 13 and 17 send or receive an average of 4,050 texts per month, far more than any other age group. The next closest group was 18-24 year olds, who send an average of 1,630 text messages per month. Those figures are both greater than the average amount of texts sent during the same quarter in 2009.

Health Texting Campaign

The White House and major mobile carriers have launched a text-messaging campaign aimed at improving the health of babies in the U.S.

The Text4baby campaign, with support from health-care providers and several government agencies, will deliver health information to women from early pregnancy through their babies first birthdays. The campaign, created by the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, will attempt to provide health tips to combat high rates of premature births and infant deaths in the U.S., the White House said in a press release.

Tracking Pets with a Mobile Signal

Qualcomm, which launches few consumer products, later this month will launch a pet-tracking service built using proprietary technology from its communications business.

Snaptracs, a subsidiary within Qualcomm, will launch Tagg, a pet-tracking system with GPS and wireless communication capabilities for owners to immediately track lost dogs or cats. The system includes a purpose-built tracking device that looks like a watch and clips on to existing pet collars.

Cell Phones Used To Contact Pilots

Minneapolis airport police say controllers tried to contact the pilots of a wayward Northwest Airlines jetliner by radio, data message and cell phone after it failed to land as scheduled.

Federal officials are investigating how the San Diego-to-Minneapolis flight overshot the airport by 150 miles on Wednesday. The pilots have told authorities they were distracted by a heated conversation.

Crime Stoppers Using Text Tips

Officials involved with Winnebago CountyWide Crime Stoppers say it won't take long before texting tips surpass telephone tips to the anonymous crime reporting line that pays cash upon convictions.

The local Crime Stoppers, one of more than 600 crime tip lines nationwide, dropped its toll-free 800 line effective March 1 and implemented a new telephone number and software to accept text messages.

Tips can now be called in to (920) 231-TIPS or 8477, while texts should be sent to CRIMES or 274637 with IGOTYA and the tip entered into the message field.
